Expansion approved for Richland Creek Storage in North Carolina

Special-use permit clears way for additional units despite zoning concerns

April 21, 2026: Richland Creek Storage has received approval to expand its facility at 187 W. Marshall St. in Waynesville.

The planning board unanimously granted a special-use permit to add approximately 75 to 80 units, totaling around 10,000 square feet. The expansion follows a rezoning application submitted nearly a year ago, as the property was no longer zoned for self-storage, though it had previously been permitted under grandfathered use.

The proposal faced some opposition from board members concerned that broader commercial zoning could allow other types of businesses—such as bars or hotels—near a nearby town park and playground. While the town council supported the rezoning, final approval required the issuance of a special-use permit.

The facility is owned by Marc Capital, based in Florida, and is managed by Copper Storage Management, which specializes in automated self-storage operations.
